Agricultural and non-agricultural outputs and energy consumption in Tunisia: empirical evidences from cointegration and causality AgEcon
Chebbi, Houssem Eddine; Boujelbene, Y..
This short paper investigates the cointegration and causality link between energy consumption and agricultural, non-agricultural outputs (manufacturing sector and services sector) and overall gross domestic product in Tunisia for 1971-2003 period. Empirical results suggest that there is only unidirectional causality running from agricultural and non-agricultural sectors to energy consumption as well as from overall GDP growth to energy consumption. This unidirectional causality signifies a less energy dependent economy and suggests that it is sectoral growth that drives the energy consumption in Tunisia and not vice versa. Empirical results suggest also that Tunisian agricultural sector growth does not depend on energy, and high consumption of energy do...

Agricultural Sector and Economic Growth in Tunisia: Evidence from Co-integration and Error Correction Mechanism AgEcon
Chebbi, Houssem Eddine; Lachaal, Lassaad.
For the past two decades, Tunisia has been undertaken important structural reforms, which call in most cases for market and trade liberalization (agricultural structural adjustment program, GATT reforms, free trade area with the European Union). The private-led type of growth strategy with less government intervention has culminated these last years into a more rapid economic growth and openness. Within this context, this paper examines the agricultural sector role into the economic growth and its interactions with the other sectors using time-series co-integration techniques. We use annual data from 1961 to 2005 to estimate a VAR model that includes GDP indices of five sectors in Tunisian economy. Empirical results from this study indicate that in the...

Agricultural Trade Liberalization and Poverty in Tunisia: Micro-simulation in a General Equilibrium Framework AgEcon
Chemingui, Mohamed Abdelbasset; Thabet, Chokri.
The study tries to answer the following questions: Will exposure to world agricultural prices generate more poverty or less? To what extent will households be affected by changes in agricultural trade polices? Do multilateral agricultural liberalization matter more than bilateral changes? Results of simulations using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model linked to household survey data suggest that trade liberalization has only modest effects on the level of GDP, but it has a substantial effect in reducing poverty. Moreover, the combined effects of global and domestic liberalization are more pro-poor than the effect of domestic liberalization alone. As a net importer of agricultural commodities, Tunisia may be expected to experience terms-oftrade...

El Abed, A.; Jabeur, Ch.; Missaoui, H.; Gobert, R.; Jarboui, O..

Assessment of sustainability in organic and conventional farms in Tunisia: The case of olive-growing farms in the region of Sfax AgEcon
Laajimi, Abderraouf; Ben Nasr, J.; Guesmi, Anis.
This research has been carried out to study the sustainability of the Tunisian olive-growing farms and to compare the sustainability level of organic with conventional farms. A survey was conducted with 62 olive growers in the region of Sfax in Tunisia. First, a diagnosis of the situation of the farms was undertaken comparing between organic and conventional farms. Second, an empirical analysis was achieved to asses the sustainability of organic farms versus conventional farms following the French “IDEA” method developed by Vilain [1] 1. The “IDEA” indicators showed a greater ranking for the organic farms. The analysis indicated the sustainability of organic farming on the three scales adopted; ecological scale, through the soil fertility and reduction of...

Characterization of <i>Artemia</i> from different localities in Tunisia with regard to their use in local aquaculture OMA
Van Ballaer, E.; Versichele, D.; Vanhaecke, P.; Léger, P.; Ben Abdelkader, N.; Turki, S.; Sorgeloos, P..
<i>Artemia</i> cysts have been collected from different saltworks and natural salt lakes in Tunisia. The cyst material was processed and used for the following characterization analyses: cyst and naupliar biometrics, cyst hatching characteristics, fatty acid pattern of the nauplii, nutritional value of the nauplii for mysid shrimp, naupliar growth rate and temperature resistance, mode of reproduction, and characterization of sibling species. The cross-breeding tests and cyst biometrics reveal that only <i>Artemia tunisiana</i> occurs in Tunisia. Although quality improvements may be expected through improved harvesting, Tunisian <i>Artemia</i> have acceptable hatching characteristics and are a good food for mysid shrimp....

CO2 emissions, energy consumption and economic growth in Tunisia AgEcon
Chebbi, Houssem Eddine; Boujelbene, Y..
The aim of this country specific study is to understand long and short-run linkages between economic growth, energy consumption and CO2 emission using Tunisian data over the period 1971-2004. Statistical findings indicate that economic growth, energy consumption and CO2 emission are related in the long-run and provide some evidence of inefficient use of energy in Tunisia, since environmental pressure tends to rise faster than economic growth. In the short run, results support the argument that economic growth exerts a positive “causal” influence on energy consumption growth. In addition, results from impulse response do not confirm the hypothesis that an increase in pollution level induces economic expansion. Although Tunisia has no commitment to reduce...

Jarboui, O.; Ben Abdallah, O.; Missaoui, H.; Ben Hadj Hamida, N..

Decomposition of output growth in the Tunisian olive-growing sector: A frontier production function approach AgEcon
Dhehibi, Boubaker; Lachaal, Lassaad; Karray, B.; Chebil, Ali.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relative contribution of technical efficiency, technological change and increased input use to the output growth of the Tunisian olive oil growing farms using a stochastic frontier production function approach applied to panel data for the period 1995- 1997. The proposed methodology is based on the use of a flexible translog functional form. Results indicate that technical efficiency of production in the sample of olive producing farms investigated ranges from a minimum of 24.8% to a maximum of 84.6% with an average technical efficiency estimate of 48.5%. This suggests that olive producers may increase their production by as much as 51.5% through more efficient use of production inputs. Further, the production is...

Demand Analysis for Fish in Tunisia: An Empirical Approach AgEcon
Dhehibi, Boubaker; Lachaal, Lassaad; Chebil, Ali.
The aim of this paper is to analyze and determine the factors influencing fish demand in Tunisia during the 1975-2000 period. A Box-Cox transformation is used to select the appropriate functional form between linear and double-log models. Results indicate that the double-log form fits better the data and is used for the empirical analysis. Calculated elasticities from static model show that fish demand is price-inelastic and that fish can be considered as a normal good. However, the dynamic analysis using Houthakker-Taylor model suggests that fish consumption in Tunisia depends on consumers psychological-buying habits. Finally, the values of the short and the long-run elasticities indicate that per capita consumption of fish in Tunisia is growing, but at a...

Romdhane, M.S.; El Abed, A.; Zarrad, R.; M’rabet, R.; Missaoui, H..

Quignard, J.p; Hamdouni, T; Zaouali, J.
Researchers have studied the number of rays in the dorsal and anal fins, the number of branchiospines and of vertebrae of the anchovies of the Tunisian coast. Regarding the number of vertebrae, the anchovies of the North West belong to the 'West Mediterranean' group and those of the North East and South East to the 'East Mediterranean' group, according to Fage's classification. The anchovies found in Lake Ishkeul are well individualised morphologically and biologically speaking and could be classified in the large group of the anchovies living in Mediterranean brackish waters; the number of their vertebrae is slightly inferior to that of the groups living in the neighbouring sea waters.

Effects of food prices and consumer income on nutrient availability: An application of the demand for dairy products in Tunisia AgEcon
Dhehibi, Boubaker; Laajimi, Abderraouf.
Number of Tunisian food demand studies have measured the influence of traditional variables, such as income and prices, and in some cases some socio-demographic variables. However, given increasing concerns about health, other important factors, such as the nutritious quality and the nutrient content of food, have also been shown to determine consumer choices. This paper analyses the effect of these factors on the demand for dairy products. The nutritious quality of dairy products is measured by an index that relates nutrient content of each product with the standards suggested by the National Academy of Science. A demand system is estimated and nutrient demand elasticities with respect to prices and expenditure are obtained. Results differ from...

Hamdi, Hnia; Majdoub-Mathlouthi, Linda; Znaïdi, Ibrahim El-Akram; Aissa, Asma; Kraiem, Khemaes.

Shaiek, Moez; Romdhane, Mohamed Salah; Le Loc'H, Francois.
In order to define the structure of trophic network of Ichkeul Lake in Tunisia, diet of main teleost fish species was determined during two seasons, wet and dry. A total of 491 stomachs from 16 teleost species was analyzed. The analysis revealed spatial variability (East under marine influence and West with more continental effect) and temporal one (wet and dry seasons). Based on stomach contents, nine trophic groups were revealed, including eight monospecific groups. The main prey are mudflat snails (Hydrobia ventrosa, H. acuta), bivalves (Abra alba, Cerastoderma glaucum), amphipods and isopods, as well as seagrass (Potamogeton pectinatus, Ruppia cirrhosa) and water brackish algae (Ulva spp. and Chaetomorpha spp., Cladophora sp., Polysiphonia sp.).

Factors affecting farmers’ willingness to adopt salt-tolerant forage crops in south-eastern Tunisia AgEcon
Chebil, Ali; Nasr, Hafedh; Zaibet, Lokman.
This paper analyzed the factors that affect farmers’ willingness to adopt salt-tolerant forage for livestock, using a Tobit model. The data used for the empirical analysis was obtained from a survey of 97 farmers in southeastern Tunisia. The results of this study show that variables related to age, education level, the salinity level of water and membership in a farmers’ association do not significantly influence the degree to which salt-tolerant forage production is adopted. It did, however, find a positive relationship between off-farm income availability and adoption. In addition, the flock size variable, expressed in Standard Livestock Units, has a significant and positive relationship with adoption. This indicates farmers’ need to cover their forage...

First record of butyltin body burden and imposex status in Hexaplex trunculus (L.) along the Tunisian coast ArchiMer
Lahbib, Youssef; Abidli, Sami; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Averty, Bernard; El Menif, Najoua Trigui.
We have assessed for the first time the current status of tributyltin (TBT) contamination in Hexaplex trunculus along Tunisian coastal waters. Two sampling campaigns have been performed in July 2004 and July 2007 at seven different sites. The snails were analyzed for imposex status, i.e. Imposex incidence, Relative Penis Length Index (RPLI) and Vas Deferens Sequence Index (VDSI), followed by the quantification of butyltins in their tissues. Imposex was detected in six populations from the 2004 samples and in five populations from the 2007 samples. The imposex incidence ranged from 0 (no imposex) to 100%, the RPLI from 0 to 56.7 and the VDSI from 0 to 4.4. TBT was also detected in six populations in 2004 and five populations in 2007.
